Window Dressing

Today, I wanted to create something fun, floral and suitable for spring, and not forgetting, something for Mothering Sunday. With this in mind, I created two youthful looks, one with a slightly maturer feel, hopefully for a lucky yummy mummy :)

These were potential outfit choices:

Until I came across these pretties:

The floral dress works so well under this cute denim dress, and teamed with these pink and white stripy pumps:

Nautical + 50s skirt + wicker wedges + spotty bag = proof you can make an epic outfit from a tiny charity shop:

For the accessories sector of my window, I had to think "Potential Mother's Day Gifts". The first thing that comes to mind are flowers, so I just needed to think out an outside of the box way of displaying them. I came across these gorgeous huge, spotty mugs, which make epic plant pots:

Everything mum could want on Mother's day - Tea in bed, flowers, a loving card and an awesome new(ish) bag:

Visual Merchandising...Shop Window

You may have noticed earlier that I have been making lots of new lovelies, or perhaps you haven't - I've been a bit lame at blogging. But it's all been in the name of my new shop window display. I'm now working at the most amazing independently owned craft store. It sells a whole manner of things; yarns, fabrics, zips, buttons...everything that makes me excited! :D

The theme is all about the make do and mend culture, to inspire people make and do! Note my crochet love heart bunting and pom pom bunting at the top :))















Attention to detail (display psychology):
As it's coming up to Valentine's Day, I've made a point of advertising all of the love heart shaped buttons we sell on the poster in the window. On the same theme, I created a Valentine's Day card made up of a buttons in the form of a love heart to inspire and encourage people to come in and buy our buttons!

Sewing Box: I carefully hand-picked each item featured in the sewing box. Bold colourful, eye catching items!

Cushion, before and after: This was another great way to advertise the variety of buttons we sell, as well as giving people great ideas of how they can breathe new life into old interiors.

Tote Bag: The tote was made by my boss, and I appliquéd it. I kept to the love heart theme, due to Valentine's Day, plus it's timeless in the world of crafting. I conveniently positioned it in the window next to an appliqué book to help boost books sales.

Yarns: I positioned the yarns in a neat triangle with an example of how it looks knitted up. This way, you can see the range of colours, as well as how pretty they look all made up!

Finally, my needle cases and owl doorstops. I made these up to demonstrate what you can make with a simple square of felt, a couple of buttons and some fat quarters. The owls are from a pattern I found by Lollychops.

Such a different experience of window dressing from my Charity shop windows...so much more hands on and creative. I love it! Can't wait to do the next one. I'm already bursting with ideas!!

This week, I ended up changing this mannequin four times, as people kept coming in and buying her clothes!! ...I guess that's the whole point though. With the horrendously cold weather we're having, I thought classic winterwear would be best sellers....

At the other shop, I was given a brief of "red and green". Despite the humongous store room, epic outfits in red and green were few and far between. For the interior mannequins, I went for these smart feminine suits. They have a very 1940s, utility war time look about them.

For the window, as always, I opted for a youthful outfit. I found this gorgeous pleated, green dress, which I placed alongside this super cute little baby girl's dress. There is so much childrens stock in at the moment, and it's about time it was advertised.

Today, I was given the challenge of creating a Christmas display! Without trying to be too cliché, I had to go with a green and red theme...well more of a teal and red theme when it came to the clothes - green and red looks a bit elf fancy dress-esque. The gift box is spilling with festive toys and present ideas, as I crammed in as many items as possible...who wouldn't want a gift box packed with prezzies?!

Over at the other store, I found this double-breasted, brown jacket, which I reckon will be a great seller, especially with the crappy weather we've been having lately. So I worked the rest of the outfits around this, except the Breakfast at Tiffany style outfit. That didn't quite go with the others, but I've kept it as a spare for when the others fly off the shelf!

Keeping it simple. This week I decided to just dress the mannequin in a simple, yet outstanding outfit. I was thinking Christmas parties. Teamed with this gold clasped belt,it's not surprising that this has already been sold less than 24hours before I put it out on show!



Over at the second shop, I went with a more seasonal look, sticking with jackets and scarves. There is a consistent theme of purples and greys, which work really well together.

It seems I haven't logged my window dressing progress lately, so here's a few weeks worth in one go!

It's getting cold now, but nobody seems to be donating any decent winterwear! Rumaging through the racks and bins in the stock room, I came across this amazing unworn Hooch scarf, so it had to go in the window! I expect it will go pretty quick! Teamed with the demin dress and long boots, it's a youthful look - something that many of the competing charity shops lack.

Also unworn, is the gingham dress. I love this dress. 1950s style - it may be a little summerwear, but teamed with a cardi it makes a glamous day outfit, but can still be dressed up for that Christmas party.

Across at the second charity stop, there is always a struggle to find one decent outfit, let alone two! But I love the challenge. I tried to aim these outfits to a maturer audience, without looking fuddy. The mannequin to the left wears skinny fit jeans tucked into knee-length boots, with a khaki jacket sinched in at the waist with a brown waist belt. The orange scarf draws in the autumnal colours. The mannequin to the right wears a stretch-fit orange skirt with a brown scoop-neck jumper, with black diamond tights tucked into cosy sheeps fur boots, and a large brown coat - perfect for autumn weather!

There were so many elegant party dresses in stock today, so it seemed right to dress the window with pretty dresses. Afterall, it's this time of year that people go out to buy they Christmas party dresses.



With chunky knit jumpers all the range at the minute, I made it my priority to sift through every rack to find the best jumpers in store. Teamed with cute mini skirts, this is what I found...

Today I was given a theme - purple and green. I found, what I think, are the best green and purple items in store. It seemed that I liked using bows today also!


Over at the second store, before I could photograph my window display, someone purchased the orginal jumper on the left mannequin, so I had to improvise with this pink number. Not quite as trendy, but that must mean I did a good job surely?! Not one of my proudest displays, but working with the limited selection, I created what is supposed to appeal to a wide audience, with the left manneqiun aimed at teens and the right at a maturer female.
